Welcome to MaryJeanBrown.com.  I am a working artist living in an old converted warehouse that I designed on the breathtakingly beautiful Sunshine Coast of British Columbia, Canada. My work is partly autobiographical. I work from people who interest me and whom I care about and think about. This way I can have my friends all around me all the time in a space that I live and know. I also work from photographs that are taken in a very specific way from clients who commission me to do a piece for them. This allows me the possibility of a new creation which comes from a completely unknown subject and forces me into another deep and personal vocabulary and relationship with my painting. I always strive toward painting the truth as I see it and making it the most it can be. I paint all people, famous or not. I have no gimmicks – no techniques. Only heart to hand. Every painting is a complete slice of life and it has to show. I transpose the beauty and the special qualities of what I see onto the canvas – larger than life are my powerful portraits.
