ABOUT MARY JEAN BROWN -  I was born in Vancouver in December of 1941 and moved to New York in 1966. My creative life opened up when I stepped into New York City. As Assistant to the President of Paraphernalia, the avant-garde fashion house of its day, I was exposed to the who’s who of the fashion world and the art world. I was responsible for opening the Village store, which in turn opened me up to the process of working with architects. This was my first professional experience with coordinating a large interior design project which later fed into my own interior design business in the late 70’s. Fashion also had its own time in my life when I owned and operated Mary Jean Brown @ Maxs Kansas City in 1969. A very high fashion clothing boutique for the discriminating eccentrics – such designers as the then unknown Norma Kamali and of course, Betsey Johnson of Paraphernalia fame.

The underground beat of New York City in the late 1960’s and early 1970’s offered worlds of opportunity for me. I was involved in many exciting projects, one of which was a company Illusions In Light, Inc. where I owned and produced psychedelic light shows for rock stars such as on The Ed Sullivan Show with The Fifth Dimension, Vanilla Fudge and Richard Harris. This led to a major in-house production for CBS as well as a one of a kind party at Yankee Stadium for the Cooper Union Alumni. There was lots of creating going on with my ability to produce the unthinkable, organize the unmanageable and make it all happen.

Serious Art entered the picture in the late 60’s when I had the life altering experience of meeting my best friend and the greatest teacher of all time, world famous Barbara Pearlman. Then a fashion illustrator and presently a sculptor and painter. Through the sharing of her vision which knows no boundaries, I have learned how to draw and how to paint and so much more. I have learned how to find my own voice, my own personal style. Painting has become my passion and my career. My twenty some years as a professional Interior Designer was the cornerstone of my career mainly in New York and later in Vancouver. I approached it with great sensitivity and it in turn educated me with every new project I undertook. I was honoured to have a double page spread in the magazine sections of the New York Times written by Marilyn Bethany along with many articles in international magazines. The depth and breadth of my background has led me to this privileged place – making art.
